The conversation with your partner

I rehearsed the conversation with my wife for two days before I had it. I'd planned to lead with a solution — a plan, a timeline, a version of events where I still had it handled. What actually came out, after about ninety seconds of the version I'd rehearsed, was: "I don't know what happens now." That sentence did more good than the two days of rehearsal.

Why "I'll fix it" is the wrong opener

It's tempting to lead with reassurance, because you want to protect her from the fear and you want to protect yourself from feeling like you've failed her. But "I'll fix it" as an opening line does two things badly. It asks her to trust a plan you haven't actually got yet. And it forecloses the conversation you actually need to have, which is a shared one about what happens next, not a briefing where she nods along.

Lead with what's true: what happened, what you know so far, what you don't know yet. Then move to what you're doing about it. The reassurance she actually needs isn't "it'll be fine" — it's "I'm not hiding this from you and we're working it out together."

What to share early

• The rough numbers — what's owed, roughly, and what personal exposure exists (from module two).
• What you've already done — who you've called, what advice you've had.
• The timeline as you understand it, including "I don't know yet" where that's honest.
• What it might mean practically in the near term — income, the mortgage, whether anything changes about day-to-day spending.

What to hold back, or hold until you know more

You don't need to share every worst-case scenario the moment it crosses your mind at 2am. There's a difference between honesty and narrating every fear as it occurs to you. If you're not sure whether the house is at risk, say "I don't think so, but I'm getting advice" rather than either false certainty or spiralling out loud. She can handle uncertainty. What erodes trust is uncertainty dressed up as certainty that later turns out to be wrong.

The identity conversation underneath the money conversation

For a lot of men, the business was part of how you saw yourself as a provider, and the fear underneath the numbers conversation is "does she still see me the same way." That fear is real and it's worth naming out loud rather than letting it sit underneath every conversation about money for the next six months. Something as direct as "I know this changes things, and I'm not sure yet how I feel about what it means about me" opens a different, more honest conversation than trying to project competence you don't currently feel.

If she's angry

She might be. Angry that you didn't tell her sooner, angry about a decision you made eighteen months ago, angry at the situation and aiming it at you because you're the person in the room. Some of that anger may be fair; let it land without immediately defending yourself. That doesn't mean absorbing blame that isn't yours, especially if the business failed for reasons genuinely outside your control (a market shift, a bad partner, an unpayable client). It means not treating her anger as a problem to be managed away in the first conversation.

What comes next

This isn't a single conversation, it's the first of many over the coming months. Set up a regular time — even fifteen minutes on a Sunday — to update each other on where things stand. Uncertainty is easier to carry together on a schedule than dropped as surprises whenever one of you finds something new out.
