Somebody at a barbecue asked me, four months in, "so what's the next thing?" I said something about a pivot, a new opportunity, all upside. It was a lie I'd started telling myself before I told it to him. The business hadn't pivoted. It had died, and I hadn't actually grieved it yet — I'd just skipped straight to the story where it was fine.
Why "pivot" language can get in the way
There's real value later in figuring out what's next, and that's genuinely what the final section of this module is about. But reaching for pivot-and-opportunity language in week two or week six, before you've actually sat with the loss, tends to produce a version of "moving on" that's really avoidance wearing a business-book vocabulary. The grief doesn't go away because you didn't name it. It shows up later, usually sideways — as irritability, as a flatness you can't place, as a reluctance to try anything new that looks suspiciously like fear dressed as caution.
Call it what it is first. You built something, put years into it, and it's gone. That's a loss, in the same category as other significant losses, even though nobody sends a card for it.
What grief for a business actually looks like
It rarely looks like sitting and crying about a spreadsheet, which is part of why men miss it in themselves. More often it looks like:
- Avoiding the industry entirely — can't look at a competitor's van, can't walk past the old shopfront.
- A flat couple of months where nothing feels like it's worth starting.
- Anger that surfaces in unrelated arguments — with your partner, with a mate, with a stranger in traffic.
- Replaying decisions obsessively, looking for the exact moment it could have gone differently.
- A weird numbness when people ask how you're doing, because the honest answer feels too big to say out loud at a barbecue.
All of that is normal grief, wearing business clothes. It doesn't mean something's wrong with you. It means you lost something that mattered.
The story you tell yourself matters
There's a difference between an honest account — "the market shifted and I couldn't adapt fast enough," "I took on a partner who turned out to be the wrong call," "I grew too fast on debt" — and a story that either makes you the sole author of a disaster or erases your responsibility entirely. Most business failures have real, nameable causes that are a mix of decisions you made and forces outside your control. Getting specific about which is which, ideally with someone outside the situation — a mentor, a therapist, a trusted mate who was actually there — stops the story calcifying into either "I'm a failure" or "none of this was my fault," both of which get in the way of what comes next.
When to start asking what's next
There's no fixed timeline, but a rough marker: once the immediate practical fires are out (creditors contacted, staff situation resolved, the legal and financial picture is known rather than feared), and once you can talk about the business without your chest tightening, that's usually the signal you've got enough clearance to start looking forward rather than just managing the fallout.
When you get there, the question isn't "what's my next big idea" — that pressure too early just recreates the same all-in pattern that got you here. It's smaller: what did you actually enjoy about the work, separate from owning it. What skills came out of this that transfer somewhere lower-risk for a while. Whether the next thing needs to be another business at all, or whether a period of being employed — steady income, someone else carrying the operational risk — is actually the right move for this specific season, not a failure to bounce back "properly."
The business ending isn't the end of the story. It's a chapter that closed, sometimes badly, and the next one gets to be written with the a specific and hard-won knowledge of exactly what you'd do differently. That's not nothing. Most men who haven't been through this don't have it.
Further watching
- 01Name it as a loss before reaching for pivot-and-opportunity language — skipping the grief doesn't remove it, it just delays and displaces it.
- 02Business grief often shows up sideways — irritability, flatness, obsessive replaying of decisions — rather than as obvious sadness.
- 03Get specific, ideally with someone outside the situation, about what was genuinely your decision and what was genuinely outside your control.
- 04Start looking forward once the practical fires are out and you can talk about the business without your chest tightening — there's no fixed timeline.
- 05The next move doesn't have to be another business. Being employed for a season is a legitimate choice, not a failure to bounce back properly.
