Week one is too busy to be lonely — there's too much to set up. The loneliness usually lands around week six, once the admin is mostly sorted and the adrenaline of "new place" wears off. You know where the supermarket is. You've found a decent coffee. And you realise you have nobody to tell about your day, which is a specific and different feeling from just being busy or tired.
Why it hits around week six, specifically
The first few weeks run on novelty and task-completion, both of which feel productive and keep the mind occupied. Once the systems are set up (module one) and the novelty fades into routine, there's space for the actual gap to become visible: you have no shared history with anyone here, no one who remembers what you were like before, no easy "how was your day" person. That's not a sign anything's gone wrong. It's the predictable shape of what moving countries actually costs, arriving on schedule.
What doesn't help
Video calls home, in large volume, can quietly make it worse rather than better — they remind you of exactly what you're missing without building anything new here, and can turn into a way of staying half-checked-out of the place you're actually in. Keep them, but don't let them become the only social contact of your week; they're maintenance for old relationships, not a substitute for building new ones.
Waiting for it to "just happen" also doesn't help. Loneliness in a new country responds to deliberate, slightly uncomfortable effort far more reliably than to time alone.
What actually helps
Recurring, low-stakes contact beats one-off big efforts. A weekly five-a-side game, a regular gym class, a standing coffee — the same faces, repeatedly, in a low-pressure setting, builds familiarity faster than trying to make a close friend in one high-effort conversation.
Say yes to the mediocre invitation. The work drinks you're not that keen on, the neighbour's barbecue, the parents' group at the school gate. Most genuine friendships in a new country start from something that felt like a chore to attend.
Name it to at least one person. Loneliness that stays entirely private tends to calcify into something heavier — low-grade depression, irritability at home, a flatness that's hard to place. Telling your partner, or a new acquaintance, "I'm finding this lonelier than I expected" is a small act that keeps it from becoming a bigger, harder-to-name problem later.
Give it real time, not a deadline. Meaningful friendships in adulthood — anywhere, not just abroad — typically take repeated contact over months, not weeks. Six weeks of effort without a close friend yet isn't failure. It's roughly on schedule.
When it's more than loneliness
If the flatness doesn't lift with deliberate effort over a few months, or if it starts looking like persistent low mood, disrupted sleep, or loss of interest in things you'd normally enjoy, that's worth taking to a GP rather than assuming it'll resolve with one more social event. Loneliness and depression can look similar early on and it's worth ruling the second one out if the first one isn't shifting.
