People are friendly here. Neighbours wave, colleagues chat, the guy at the gym remembers your name. And six months in, none of them are actually friends — nobody you'd call at 11pm, nobody who knows what's actually going on with you. Friendly and friends are different things, and mistaking the first for the second is one of the quieter traps of moving somewhere new in your forties.
Why this is harder at 40+ than it was at 22
At 22, shared context does most of the work — university, a first job, a share house, everyone equally unattached and looking to fill their calendar. At 40+, most people around you already have their social circle largely built: partners, kids' school communities, friendships fifteen years deep. Nobody's actively looking to add a new close friend the way they might have been at 22. That doesn't mean it's impossible. It means it requires more deliberate effort and takes longer, and knowing that in advance stops it feeling like personal failure when it's slower than you expected.
What actually works, roughly in order of effectiveness
Recurring structured activity beats general socialising. A five-a-side team, a cycling group, a men's shed, a regular volunteering shift. Structure gives you something to talk about besides small talk, and repetition builds the familiarity that a single event can't.
Parent networks, if you have kids. School gate conversations, sports team sidelines, and parent group chats are one of the most reliable, low-effort paths to real local friendships, because they come with weekly built-in contact and a shared context (your kids) that generates conversation without effort.
Work, if it has any social dimension at all. Not everyone's job supports this, but if yours has any casual social layer, use it — it's free proximity time you'd otherwise have to manufacture from scratch.
Interest-based groups over generic "meet people" apps. A specific hobby group — chess, brewing, running, whatever you'd actually do anyway — filters for people you're likely to get on with, rather than a room of strangers with nothing but "new here" in common.
The move from friendly to friend
The actual mechanism, at any age, is repeated low-stakes contact plus one slightly vulnerable moment. Someone becomes a friend not because you decided to try harder, but because you ran into them enough times that a real conversation eventually happened — you mentioned something honest, they did too, and the relationship became one degree less superficial. You can't force that moment, but you can create more opportunities for it by choosing recurring contact over one-off events, and by being willing to say something true when the ordinary opening for it appears.
Deliberate, not lucky
The men who build a real social life abroad within a couple of years are almost never the ones who got lucky — they're the ones who treated it as a project worth deliberate weekly effort, the same way they'd treat fitness or a work goal, rather than waiting for it to happen naturally the way it might have in their twenties. That's not a discouraging fact. It's a useful one — it means this is substantially in your control, on a longer timeline than you'd like, but genuinely in your control.
