You last did this when the default channel was being introduced by friends, meeting at work, or shouting over music in a pub. Fifteen to twenty-five years later, the mechanics have changed more than the fundamentals. Here's the honest delta.
Apps are the default channel now. Something like half of new relationships start online, and at 45+ it's higher than any other channel simply because the alternatives have thinned out. Knowing what the environment is actually like matters more than any tactic: the pool is smaller than it was at 26, every profile carries more history (kids, mortgages, a divorce or two, everyone's been burned at least once), and the whole thing runs on photos first and words second. It is not better or worse than the old world. It is slower and more literal.
Texting is a thing now. There were no texting norms to breach in 2001 — you rang, or you didn't. Now there's a whole grammar: how fast you reply, how many messages before you suggest meeting, whether a phone call is charming or alarming. The honest guide is simple: text to arrange meeting, not to conduct the relationship. Anyone who's a good texter and an unavailable person is teaching you what they are. And don't read tea leaves — three hours without a reply means three hours of someone's Tuesday, not a verdict.
Photos: the honest standard. Recent, clear, your actual face, no sunglasses, no fish, no group shot where she has to guess which one you are, no ex cropped out at the shoulder. The photograph is doing more work than any sentence you'll write. The companions piece "Your photos are the problem" covers this properly.
Ghosting and soft rejection are the new weather. Conversations end mid-sentence. A good first date is followed by nothing. At 26 this was rare enough to be an insult; now it's the ambient condition of the whole channel — cheap to do, consequence-free for the person doing it, and mostly a statement about them and the volume they're juggling, not about you. Treat it like rain. You still go outside.
What hasn't changed. This is the part worth holding onto. In-person presence — actually being somewhere, in a body, paying attention — still does more than any profile optimisation. Honesty still reads as confidence and its absence still reads as its own kind of lie. Being interesting to yourself first — having a life someone can join rather than a vacancy someone can fill — is still the thing that makes any of this work. The man who's curious, present, and comfortable in his own week is rarer at 48 than he was at 25, and it shows faster.
The technology moved. You didn't have to.
