Nobody can hand you a readiness certificate, and any quiz that claims to is selling something. What follows instead is a set of questions worth answering honestly — in writing, not in your head, because your head is very good at telling you what you want to hear when you're lonely.
The rebound question. How long has it actually been — not since the separation, since the relationship truly ended? For a lot of men the relationship was over years before the paperwork. For others it ended the day she said it was over, and three months later they're on a first date carrying the whole thing. There is no magic number of months. But if the honest answer to "what am I doing Saturday nights?" is "replaying arguments," the dating energy isn't there yet, and a first date can't compete with a ghost.
The unfinished-business question. Is the separation finalised? Is custody mid-flight? Is there a house to sell, a settlement to sign, a solicitor's letter you're avoiding? None of this disqualifies you from dating. But every one of these is a thread still attached to your old life, and the person you meet now will feel every tug. More to the point: unfinished business eats the attention a new connection needs. You don't have to be fully settled to date well. You do have to know what's still open, and be honest about it early.
The ex question. Be blunt with yourself: how much of your daily thinking is still about her? Not resentment — that fades on its own schedule — but occupation. If she still lives in your head rent-free, the first new person in your life will notice before you do. A useful test: when something good happens, a promotion, a decent round of golf, a funny thing the dog did — who do you want to tell? If the answer is still her, that's information.
The loneliness-versus-desire question. This is the hardest one. Are you looking for a person, or for anaesthetic? Loneliness after a long relationship is real and it's brutal, and wanting relief from it is human. But there's a difference between wanting a specific person in your life and wanting a warm body positioned between you and the silence. The second one isn't evil — but it's unfair to her, and it will quietly pick the wrong women, because the choosing standard becomes "available and willing," which is no standard at all.
What the honest answer is for. None of these questions have failing answers. "Yes, it's a rebound" doesn't mean don't date — it means know that's what this is, keep it light, and don't make promises. "Yes, the ex still occupies space" doesn't mean wait — it means work on that while you date slowly. "Yes, it's loneliness" doesn't mean give up — it means build the friendships and the life first, because they're the things that actually treat loneliness, and they make you better company when you do date.
The honest answer tells you what to work on first and what to be upfront about. That's all readiness is. It isn't a gate you pass. It's a map of where you actually are.
- 01There is no magic timeline — the real question is how much of your attention is still spent on the old relationship, and honesty beats any rule of thumb.
- 02Unfinished business (settlement, custody, the unsold house) doesn''t disqualify you from dating — but know what''s still open, because a new person will feel every tug.
- 03Ask the loneliness question straight: a person, or anaesthetic? Loneliness quietly picks the wrong women because "available" becomes the only standard.
- 04No answer here disqualifies you. The honest answer tells you what to work on first and what to be upfront about — that is all readiness is.
- 05Write the answers down. Your head will tell you what you want to hear when you''re lonely; paper is harder to argue with.
