You've probably quit before. Most men reading this have - a few days here, a fortnight there, once maybe three months before a bad week undid it. If "just stop" worked, you wouldn't be reading this. So before this journey gives you anything new to try, it's worth being honest about what you've already tried and what actually happened.
This isn't a guilt exercise. It's reconnaissance. You're about to spend real effort on this again, and effort spent without knowing your own patterns is effort wasted repeating the same failed attempt with more willpower behind it.
What actually happened last time
Think back to your last serious attempt - not a lazy New Year's resolution, the one where you genuinely tried. Answer these honestly, on paper if that helps:
- How long did it last?
- What method did you use, if any - cold turkey, patches, gum, nothing?
- What was happening in your life at the time you started?
- What was happening when it ended? Not "I just had one" - what was the actual moment, the actual trigger?
- Did it end in one cigarette, or did you go from zero to a full pack over a day or two?
Most men can answer the last two questions in detail once they actually sit with it. The relapse rarely comes out of nowhere. It comes from a specific, identifiable moment - a fight with your partner, a work deadline, a few drinks with mates, boredom on a Sunday afternoon. Naming that moment is the single most useful thing this module does.
The trigger inventory
Over the next few days, before you quit, notice every cigarette. Not to judge it - to map it. For each one, note:
When - time of day, day of the week.
Where - the car, the back step, outside the office, the pub.
With whom - alone, a specific mate, a partner, colleagues.
After what - coffee, a meal, a difficult phone call, a drink, stress, boredom, nothing in particular.
Most smokers of 20+ years have somewhere between 6 and 12 genuinely distinct trigger patterns, not hundreds of random ones. The morning coffee cigarette. The drive-to-work cigarette. The post-lunch cigarette. The stress cigarette. The drink cigarette. The boredom cigarette. Once you can see the list, you can plan for it - which is the entire point of the modules that follow.
Why "this time is different" is the wrong question
The more useful question isn't "will this time be different" - you can't know that in advance, and asking it just generates anxiety. The more useful question is "what specifically will I do differently at the three moments that broke my last attempt." If your list from above includes "a few drinks with mates" as a trigger, the next few modules on social architecture and the relapse map are where you build the actual plan for that specific moment, not a vague intention to "be strong."
What worked, even briefly
If you managed a week, a month, three months - something in that stretch worked, even if it eventually broke. Was it NRT? Not being around a particular person? A specific replacement habit? Don't discard it because it eventually failed. Most successful quits build on partial successes from earlier attempts, not a single perfect method found on the first try.
This module has no action item beyond the audit
You don't need to quit today to do this module properly. Do the audit first, honestly, over a few days if you smoke normally during them. The next module is where the actual quitting starts - this one is where you make sure you're not walking into the same three ambushes that got you last time.
Further watching
- 01Most relapses come from a specific, identifiable moment - not randomly. Name your last one in detail before you try again.
- 02Map your trigger inventory: when, where, with whom, after what, for every cigarette over a few days.
- 03Most 20-year smokers have 6-12 distinct trigger patterns, not hundreds of random ones. A short list is manageable.
- 04The useful question isn't "will this time be different" - it's "what will I do differently at the specific moments that broke last time."
- 05Don't discard what worked even briefly in past attempts. Build on partial successes rather than starting from zero each time.
