If you are reading this, "just stop" has not worked. You already know that, or you would not be here. The question is not whether you have a problem — you have decided that, or someone else has decided it for you, or the pattern has become impossible to ignore. The question is what specifically the pattern is, what drives it, and what breaks it.
This module is reconnaissance, not confession. You are not here to feel guilty. You are here to map the territory so that the modules that follow have something concrete to work with. Vague intentions — "I need to stop" — fail because they are not attached to anything specific. A trigger inventory is specific.
The pattern map
Before you try to change anything, spend a few days observing the pattern as it actually is, not as you wish it were. On paper, not in your head — the act of writing it down makes it harder to edit in the moment. For each instance over the next week or two, note:
When — time of day, day of the week. Is there a pattern? Late at night? After a drink? During a stressful work period? On specific days when you are alone?
The trigger — what happened in the hour before? A stressful phone call. Boredom. A fight. A drink. Loneliness. Seeing something online. The trigger is rarely the behaviour itself — it is the state you were in before the behaviour became inevitable.
The cost — financial, time, emotional. Be honest about the money. Men routinely underestimate what they spend by half or more, because the spending happens in compartments that are never added up. Add them up.
The aftermath — what happened in the hour after? Shame, relief, numbness, resolution to stop, immediate planning of the next time? The aftermath is part of the cycle, not a consequence of it.
The honesty exercise
Write it down. All of it. Not a summary — the actual inventory, with dates and amounts and specifics, on paper, without editing. The impulse to minimise, to round down, to skip the ones that feel worse — that impulse is the pattern protecting itself. You do not have to show it to anyone. You have to see it clearly yourself.
Most men who complete this exercise honestly are surprised by one of two things: the frequency is higher than they estimated, or the cost — financial, temporal, emotional — is larger than they were carrying consciously. Both of those surprises are useful. They are the beginning of an accurate map.
The escalation question
Has it gotten more frequent over time? Riskier? Harder to control? Has what it takes to reach the same level of satisfaction changed — more novel stimuli, more extreme scenarios, higher stakes?
Escalation is not a moral judgement. It is a clinical feature of compulsive behaviour patterns. Tolerance builds in compulsive sexual behaviour not in the same way as with substances, but through the same mechanism — the reward circuitry adapts, and what was sufficient yesterday is not sufficient today. Naming escalation honestly is not catastrophising. It is information about the trajectory you are on, and it matters for deciding whether DIY approaches are enough or whether professional help is needed.
What worked, even briefly
If you have managed to stop for a period — a week, a month, longer — something in that stretch worked, even if it eventually broke. Was it a change in environment? A particular period of lower stress? Being around people more? Having a specific accountability structure? Don't discard what worked because it eventually failed. Most successful recoveries are built on partial successes from earlier attempts, not a single perfect method found on the first try.
This is not a guilt exercise
The shame you carry about this is already heavy enough. Adding more does not help — it feeds the cycle, because the behaviour is partly a response to negative emotion, and shame is a negative emotion. This module is about seeing the pattern clearly so you can plan for the specific moments that break you. Nothing more, nothing less.
The next module explains why willpower alone does not work — not because you are weak, but because the behaviour is wired into reward circuitry that "just stop" does not touch.
- 01Map the pattern on paper: when, the trigger, the cost (financial, time, emotional), and the aftermath for each instance over a week or two.
- 02Most men underestimate frequency and cost by half or more because the spending and behaviour happen in compartments that are never added up.
- 03Escalation — more frequent, riskier, harder to control — is a clinical feature of compulsive behaviour, not a moral judgement. It tells you about the trajectory.
- 04Don't discard what worked even briefly in past attempts. Most successful recoveries build on partial successes, not a single perfect method.
- 05This is reconnaissance, not confession. Shame feeds the cycle. Seeing the pattern clearly is the beginning of an accurate plan.
