The first ninety days

I spent my first week in the new country trying to set up everything at once — bank account, phone plan, tax number, a permanent lease — and got almost nothing finished, because most of those things depend on each other in an order nobody tells you in advance. The bank wanted proof of address I didn't have yet. The lease wanted a local bank account. Everything was waiting on everything else.

There's an order that actually works, and it's not the order your instincts suggest.

The dependency chain

Most new-country admin has a hidden order of operations:

1. Somewhere to receive mail — even short-term accommodation or a friend's address. Almost everything else needs a physical address before it'll process you.
2. A local phone number. Banks, government registrations and most rentals want one. Get a prepaid SIM in the first 48 hours.
3. Your tax/national identity number (an ABN or TFN equivalent, a Social Security Number, a National Insurance Number — whatever your destination calls it). This unlocks legitimate paid work and often banking.
4. A bank account. Some countries let you open one before you have permanent address proof; others don't. Ask specifically, don't assume based on your home country's rules.
5. Healthcare registration — enrol in the public system if one exists, or confirm private cover is active, before you need it, not after.
6. A permanent lease, once you've got the above sorted enough to qualify for one.

Getting this order roughly right saves weeks. Getting it wrong means circling back to step one after failing at step four.

What to do before you've even landed, if you can

Visa conditions, work rights, and healthcare eligibility genuinely vary by visa subclass in ways that change everything downstream — what you can legally do in week one is different on a work visa, a partner visa, and a permanent residency pathway. Know your specific visa's conditions cold before you land, not roughly. If you're not certain, a one-off consultation with a migration agent in your destination country, before or just after arrival, is worth the cost.

What can genuinely wait

Not everything needs solving in week one. A car, a permanent gym, a long-term social circle, understanding the entire tax system in depth — all of these have a runway of months, not days. Trying to solve everything in the first fortnight is how men burn out before the actual adjustment (which takes longer, and is covered in later modules) has even started.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Assuming your home country's systems as the default and getting confused when the new country's don't match. A "credit score," a "GP," a "notary," "superannuation" — these words exist in most countries and mean genuinely different things in each. Ask a specific, dumb question rather than assuming equivalence: "when you say GP here, is that the same as what I'd call a GP at home, or something different." It saves real mistakes later, and nobody thinks less of you for asking.

What good looks like at day 90

Mail sorted, a bank account, a tax number, healthcare active, a lease you're not scrambling out of. Not a full social life, not fluency in the tax system, not a sense of belonging yet. Those come later and get their own modules. Ninety days is for systems, not for feeling settled.
