Around month six, most men who've moved get asked, or ask themselves, some version of "so is this home now?" It rarely arrives as a crisis. More often it's quiet — you notice you've stopped counting down to a return trip, or you catch yourself calling the new place "home" without thinking about it, or the opposite: you realise you've been avoiding the question entirely because you're not ready to answer it either way.
There's no deadline on this answer
Some men know within months. Others take years, and some genuinely never fully resolve it, holding a dual sense of home indefinitely — and that's a legitimate place to land, not a failure to properly settle. There's no correct timeline here, despite what it might feel like when someone else's confident answer makes yours feel slow.
What actually tends to shift the answer, when it shifts
It's rarely one big moment. More often it's an accumulation: a local friendship that's become genuinely important (module four), a routine that feels like yours rather than borrowed, a moment where you reach for the new country's way of doing something without thinking about it, a season where you didn't think about the old country for a stretch of days. None of these are dramatic. They're the texture of a place becoming yours by accretion rather than by decision.
The pressure to decide too fast
There's often external pressure — from family back home wanting a timeline, from a partner who needs to know for planning reasons, from your own discomfort with ambiguity — to produce a firm answer before you actually have one. Resisting that pressure, and saying honestly "I don't know yet, and I'm not going to force it" is a legitimate answer, even though it satisfies nobody looking for certainty.
If you're leaning toward "not yet, maybe never"
That's also a legitimate answer, and it's worth being honest about it rather than performing an integration you're not actually feeling, particularly if a partner or kids are more settled than you are. A frank conversation about what specifically isn't landing — is it the loneliness (module three), the accent and the outsider feeling (module four), something practical, something you miss that isn't replaceable — is more useful than a vague, private sense of not-quite-fitting that you never actually name to anyone.
If you're leaning toward "yes, this is home"
Let that be true without guilt about the old country. Feeling more at home in the new place doesn't erase what the old one meant, and it's not a betrayal of where you're from to have built a real life somewhere else. Men sometimes hold back from fully claiming the new place as home because it feels disloyal to the old one. It isn't. Both can be true — you can love where you're from and genuinely live, fully, somewhere else.
Where this journey leaves you
The first year of moving somewhere new is mostly logistics and adjustment — visas, tax, loneliness, identity, and finally this question. None of it resolves on a fixed schedule, and all of it gets easier with time and deliberate effort more than with waiting. If you've worked through the modules in this journey, you've done more deliberate work on this transition than most people manage by instinct alone. That matters, whatever the answer to "is this home" turns out to be, and whenever it arrives.
Further watching
- 01"Is this home" typically arrives quietly around month six, not as a crisis — and there's no correct timeline for answering it.
- 02The answer usually shifts through accumulation — a real friendship, a routine that feels like yours — not one big moment.
- 03Resist pressure from family or a partner to produce a firm answer before you actually have one. "I don't know yet" is legitimate.
- 04If you're leaning "not yet, maybe never," name specifically what isn't landing rather than carrying a vague, unnamed sense of not-fitting.
- 05If you're leaning "yes, this is home," let that be true without guilt — it doesn't erase or betray what the old country meant to you.
